Q: My child is being bullied. How can karate
help?
A: Our Martial Arts training for children is structured to develop
the child’s confidence, however they must also be taught the
discipline not to use their skills unless absolutely necessary.
The child therefore can develop the personal strengths, plus we
teach them specific tools & actions needed to deal with the
bullying problem.
We have an Anti Bullying Program & Stranger Awareness Program
that we teach in primary & secondary schools all over the West
Midlands. The tools that we use have been developed by a children’s
safety charity. I would like

Q: Can children enter competitions?
A: Yes. Competitions are optional in the club, and include sparring
and kata (pre arranged, individually performed patterns). Sparring
is initially non-contact, and later there are options for semi contact
sparring if the parents & Instructor give their approval.
We have club championships once per year, however there is a Zenshin
Tournament Squad that is involved in Regional & National Tournaments
for those students who wish to try out for it!

Q: Will my child get hurt during training?
A: We take great care to ensure that children do not spar until
they have had a few months practising how to block & move. Children
need to develop in confidence & discipline before they practise
sparring, so that we can avoid accidents! Children’s sparring
is also non-contact, which further reduces the chances of injury.
Protective equipment is worn on the hands & feet to further
ensure safety. Safety is in the front of our minds!

Q: What happens if my child uses their karate
the wrong way? (i.e. fighting at school, or at home).
A: Fortunately this rarely happens, however we ask the parents
to keep us informed of their child’s behaviour. Instructors
will explain the correct & incorrect use of karate, & if
a student steps over the line the instructor will normally warn
them privately, & remind them of their responsibilities. Every
case must be considered on an individual basis, however in serious
cases the student may receive a ban from certain activities within
the classes, a ban from training from a short period or even exclusion
for the club. We try to work with the parents on these issues, &
use their training as a motivational tool towards good behaviour.

Q: What is offered in the syllabus?
A: The foundation of our syllabus is freestyle karate, which includes
a mixture of traditional & modern karate concepts & training
ideas. Sparring is initially non-contact, however more semi contact
sparring is available as the student progresses, & if they wish
to do so. We include grappling (groundwork / wrestling) in our training
schedule, although this is not available at every location due to
the absence of mats. We are also in the process of developing a
weapons syllabus, focussing on modern type self defence weapons
such as sticks & knives.
We invite some of the most sought after Self Defence Instructors
in the country as an added extra to our syllabus, & these seminars
focus on specific areas such as knife defence. Our goal is to provide
a foundation for you to be tested on, with the freedom for you to
be able to use or adapt your skills in a real self-defence situation.

Q: How can I expect to benefit from training?
A: In the early stages you will be allowed to go at your own pace,
as you get used to the structure of a class & the physical requirements.
You can expect to become much fitter, more agile & flexible,
more confident, aware & better prepared to defend yourself should
the situation arise. You can also expect to make a lot of new friends
& possibly become involved in the variety of social events that
go on within the club! Enjoy your training!
